"This is a tool we can use as a township to help keep school taxes low," said Supervisor Larry Sebring. But unlike the current EIT which is designated for general township operations, the entire revenue from the new levy will be used to buy open space properties outright or purchase from the owners the development rights to those lands, and to purchase agricultural conservation easements as well as recreational or historical properties. The additional 0.25 percent earned income tax - the township already collects a 0.50 percent EIT - will generate an estimated $600,000 annually. ![]() In any case, following voter approval in a referendum last November and an emotional public hearing Monday night, Stroud Township supervisors voted 3-0 to give the open space tax a try. ![]() STROUD TOWNSHIP - Perhaps only time will tell if a special 0.25 percent earned income tax will create enough revenue to preserve rapidly dwindling open space in the township, or merely add to a rising overall tax burden without saving pristine property from the onslaught of population growth.
